Abstract:
The bacterium Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa) causes leaf spots, dieback and canker of kiwifruit plants. Psa has been isolated from kiwifruit in Korea since the 1990s. In 2011, Psa strains were isolated in the Goeheung region that were unlike the Psa isolated in the late 1990s but which resembled strains from a virulent outbreak of the disease in Italy. The whole genome sequences of these 2011 strains (SYS1, SYS2 and SYS4) contain several features distinguishing them from strains previously isolated in Korea and linking them to strains from the disease outbreaks in Italy, New Zealand, Chile and China. The SYS strains are distinguished by the presence of a ~330,000 bp plasmid that has little sequence similarity to any plasmid held in the public databases.
