Jeffry Pondaag (1953), geboren in Jakarta, kwam samen met zijn Nederlandse moeder op 16-jarige leeftijd naar Nederland. Hij vertelt over zijn ervaringen op school en als cement arbeider waar hij met zijn achtergrond vaak als ‘anders’ gezien wordt, en over de verdeeldheden in zijn Indonesisch-Nederlandse familie. In 2005 richt hij met Batara Hutagalung het Comité Nederlandse Ereschulden, Komite Utang Kehormatan Belanda (KUKB) op. In 2007 werd de Nederlandse tak een stichting met als doel het behartigen van de belangen van de Indonesische burgerslachtoffers en hun nakomelingen, die onder het geweld van het Nederlandse koloniale regime hebben geleden. Met hulp van advocaat Liesbeth Zegveld spanden zij in 2009, namens de ‘weduwen van Rawagede’, een rechtszaak aan tegen de Nederlandse Staat. In 2011 oordeelde de rechtbank in Den Haag dat de Nederlandse Staat aansprakelijk was voor het aangerichte leed en compensatie en excuses moest aanbieden aan de weduwen. Als gevolg eisten tientallen weduwen en kindslachtoffers van Zuid-Sulawesi ook excuses en compensatie, terwijl in Nederland een debat over het koloniaal verleden op gang kwam. Pondaag zelf gaat het niet alleen om de rechtvaardigheid in Indonesië zelf, maar ook hier in Nederland: ‘Nederland moet beseffen, wat ze gedaan hebben.’

Narrated (In)justice is een onderzoeksproject (2014-2016) van historica Nicole L. Immler dat in beeld brengt hoe historisch onrecht in toenemende mate door middel van financiële compensatie claims publieke aandacht vraagt. Wereldwijd zijn de laatste jaren compensatiebetalingen voor slachtoffers een belangrijk onderdeel geworden van ‘erkenning’. In Nederland hebben de recente betalingen aan Joods-Nederlandse slachtoffers een rol gespeeld in de claims van slachtoffers van de dekolonisatieoorlog in Indonesië (de zogenaamde Rawagede casus) en zijn ook referentiepunt in de claims van nazaten van voormalige tot slaaf gemaakten uit de voormalige koloniën Suriname en de Nederlands Antillen.
Op basis van drie Nederlandse casussen – met betrekking tot de Holocaust, kolonialisme en slavernij – laat het project zien hoe de ervaring van onrecht in families over de generaties doorverteld wordt, wat de motivatie achter compensatie claims is, en wat de perceptie en de betekenis van zulke maatregelen is. De vraag is of dergelijke compensatie ook voldoet aan de verwachtingen die mensen ervan hebben.
Het onderzoek Narrated (In)Justice is mogelijk gemaakt door een Marie Curie Fellowship in het 7th European Community Framework Program, uitgevoerd binnen het onderzoeksprogramma ‘Understanding the Age of Transitional Justice: Narratives in Historical Perspective’ van het NIOD Instituut voor Oorlog, Holocaust en Genocide Studies.
