AlgemeenAanleiding tot het onderzoek was de herinrichting van de openbare ruimtes ter hoogte van de Mr. Pankenstraat in het centrum van Bergeijk. Onder deze werknaam valt een gedeelte van de weg ’t Hof, de Mr. Pankenstraat en een gedeelte van het Eijckereind, inclusief de aansluitingen van de hierop uitkomende wegen.
DoelstellingDe doelstelling van een archeologische begeleiding conform het protocol opgraven is het documenteren van gegevens en het veilig stellen van materiaal van vindplaatsen om daarmee informatie te behouden die van belang is voor de kennisvorming over het verleden.
WerkwijzeEr is in totaal één vlak in één werkput aangelegd van gemiddeld 6 meter breed en 170 meter lang. Het vlak is aangelegd in de C-horizont, de laag waar de eerste sporen zich aftekenden. Alle sporen zijn getekend, gedocumenteerd en afgewerkt. De aanleg is begeleid met een metaaldetector en elke metaal-vondst is met een Robotic Total Station (RTS) ingemeten.
ResultatenDe oudste sporen dateren uit de 16e eeuw. Verder zijn meerdere sporen gevonden uit de 17e en de 18e eeuw, waaronder karrensporen, een afvalkuil en een brandkuil. In het westelijke deel van het onderzoeksgebied zijn restanten aangetroffen van een vermengde A- en E-horizont en een B-horizont.
