초록

This paper investigates the repetition of a 27-year-old male stutterer’s discourse from a pragmatic perspective. Repetitions by adults who stutter are divided into two types: atypical type and typical type. We find that although the tokens of his typical type of repetition are not always “typical”, they are mostly produced in the text where he takes the hearer into account. The results show the functions of his repetitions vary according to whether he is under the influence of the symptoms such as facial tics or excessive tension. Without symptoms, he uses repetitions to delay for planning, repair errors, and emphasize speaker’s attitude; the normality of forms and usage is verified by analyzing radio talk shows. When the symptoms hit, repeating forms are distorted but serve as a communicative device: conveying information. In these forms are included recovering from devastation, reducing speed before stuttering, and expanding to complete the expressions. The results may not be generalized as the data only deal with one participant, yet they can shed light on linguistic analysis and interpretation of the stutterer's utterances.
