초록

This study is to examine final endings with ‘Beonyeoksohak’ published in the 16th century. This study identified syntactic characteristics of final endings in ‘Beonyeoksohak’ by dividing them into four categories- declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory. The examples of declarative endings are ‘-da’, ‘-la’,‘ ‘-lsila’, and so on. ‘-da’ is used when speakers intend to deliver information about certain facts to listeners. If preceding forms are prefinal endings such as ‘-o/u-’, ‘-gwa’, and ‘-deo’, the ending ‘-da’ is replaced by ‘-la’. And ‘-nda,’ once an indicative, is used as declarative. For interrogative endings, ‘-nda’ used for the second person in the previous era did not appear; instead, ‘-nyeo’ or ‘-nyo’ was used. Along with this characteristic, ‘-lyeo’ and ‘-lyo’ also appeared. One of the typical imperative endings was ‘-la’, used together with ‘-gola’, ‘-syosyeo’, and ‘-syusyeo’. As exclamatory endings, ‘-ndyeo’, ‘-ndya’ and ‘-lsyeo’ were used. This study has some limitations in that it examined linguistic phenomena only with a single piece of literature. However, its findings can be the foundation for investigating Korean final endings in the 16th century.
