The crystal structure of manganese nitrate tetrahydrate Mn(NO3)2 · 4H2O

Abstract

Crystals of Mn(NO3)2 · 4H2O belong to the monoclinic system, space group P21/n, with a = 5.378(10) Å, b = 27.41(10) Å, c = 5.80(3) Å, β = 113.5(4)°, Z = 4. The crystal structure has been determined on the basis of photographic data for 1001 independent reflections, with the final R value of 13.8%. The manganese atoms are surrounded by a distorted octahedron consisting of four water oxygen and two oxygen atoms from nitrate ions. The structure is built up of the layers of manganese octahedra, separated by two layers of nitrate ions. The hydrogen bonds join the octahedra in the layer, and the layers together as well. The structure of Mn(NO3)2·4H2O is isotypic with that of Ni(NO3)2·4H2O.
