Abstract
In annealed, synthetic samples of Mg2-xFexSiO4 the Mg2+ and Fe2+ ions are not randomly distributed. With 0.1 ≦ x ≦ 0.6 the larger Fe2+ ions replace preferentially Mg2+ in octahedral sites of symmetry m and the lattice dimensions do not change in this range. Quenching tends to yield samples with more randomly distributed cations and the lattice dimensions approach those of natural olivines.
