Sino-Anglo conflict over Namwan Triangle in early modern timesChinese Full Text

YAO Yong;Center of Historical Anthropology,Sun Yat-sen University;

Abstract: Namwan Triangle led to a serious territorial conflict between China and Myanmar in early modern times. At the end of the Qing dynasty,Myanmar compelled China to permanently release Namwan Triangle,annually paying R. S 1,000 as compensation for the loss of Mongmao Sawbwa’ territory. In the 1920 s,Myanmar stopped paying the rent in order to force the Chinese government to take the responsibility for its support of the raid by the Myanmarian prince Saw Yan Baing in exile in Yunnan,which caused the Sino-Anglo diplomatic dispute lasting for a decade. Namwan Triangle,occupied by the Japanese army in 1942,was recovered by the Chinese Expeditionary Force in 1945. The local residents once established the autonomic institute,hoping to hold a referendum according to the Atlantic Charter to get it recovered to China,but couldn’t terminate the permanent lease with Myanmar.
