Abstract
For more than a decade, the information and communication technology (ICT) is changing and evolving rapidly and therefore, has huge impact on almost every aspect of life. Companies, organizations and individuals relocate their activities increasingly into the digital world. For example, industrial and trading companies use more intensively the potential of e-Commerce, public authorities and institutions reduce the administrative burden by using e-Government, social interactions tend to be held more often in virtual networks, and also a large part of global financial transactions would be infeasible without the use of ICT. This dramatically increasing digitalization of everyday business life and society itself, significantly higher demands on information systems and an ever-growing demand for computing power and memory go along. Therefore, Cloud Computing provides a possible solution for this issues. Seemingly endless IT resources enable a highly flexible and scalable hardware and software infrastructure for enterprises. Thereby, clouds can have different organizational forms / characteristics, e.g., as private, public or hybrid cloud. Furthermore, companies can decide for on premise clouds (sourcing option: insourced) set up within and only for their own company or to procure this from third-party vendor from “outside” the company (sourcing option: outsourced). However, regardless of the specific configuration of the “computing in the cloud”, Cloud Computing provides efficient and effective support options for future developments and trends, e.g., for the enterprise’s orientation towards a fully digitalized business or towards Industry 4.0 business activities. Partially, it is even possible to state that the use of clouds and cloud services is a fundamental and essential part to meet and to deal with the challenges of the ongoing technological progress and development.
