Parametric phase control in vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser arrays with two-cavity species

Abstract

Closely packed arrays of actively interacting vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers show spontaneous long-range phase locking into periodic Bloch steady states. We study the case in which a staggered application of two biases creates a two-cavity-species array. Analysis and simulations show that the phase shift ΦAB among neighbor sites is controlled by the ratio of the applied biases IA/IB among two-cavity species. For modest array sizes, the near field ΦAB causes a small angular deviation (beam steering) in the far-field pattern relative to the uniform array IA=IB case.
