This essay critiques John F. Kennedy's address at Rice University on the nation's space effort and its rhetorical construction of romantic, transcendent appeals designed to motivate audiences toward participating in massive and ambiguous space goals. The essay examines the influence such appeals have had on subsequent presidential and administrative space program rhetoric.
