Abstract

Abstract:

This paper presents a new analysis of Alexander the Great's journey to Siwah. I conclude that Callisthenes' fragmentary account of the episode is better than other sources; that the Vulgate account of Alexander's acclamation as “son of Ammon” in a greeting is a fiction of Cleitarchus and that Alexander was acclaimed as son of Ammon in response to a specific question to the high priest.
