This essay descriptively presents the treaty tradition at Ebla through an organic discourse analysis of the treaty between Ebla and Abarsal (ARET 13:5) and several other treaty-related documents. The study first engages the notions of “treaty” and “treaty tradition,” and summarizes the “oil oath” as a significant treaty-based idiom. An outline of the discourse methodology implemented in the analysis follows, which focuses on distinguishing unique discourse varieties found in the Eblaite treaty materials, identifies all clause-level connectors in ARET 13:5, and identifies all Eblaic predicate structures in this treaty.
