Abstract
The "smectic D" mesophase has been described in the past as a cubic arrangement of rods. In the present work, a molecular model, in which rods are formed by the stacking of small groups of molecules lying side by side, is proposed. The junction of the rods occurs through a cholestericlike twist of the molecules. A possible connection between this structure and that of the blue phases is suggested.
