ABSTRACT

There are some very simple facts about the brain that are well-known to all neuroscientists, yet have thus far not attracted the attention of many clinicians and clinical researchers. For instance, the brain is the most metabolically active organ in the body, which means that it requires the most energy in the form of ATP to function optimally. What do our mitochondria need to produce more ATP? They need many nutrients, including glucose. Here is an indication of how demanding the brain is: a liter of blood ows through our brains every minute that our hearts are beating. What is that blood doing? Of course it delivers oxygen and carries away waste products; however, it also delivers the nutrients needed to feed our mitochondria and sustain brain function.
