ABSTRACT

Papers (Biletskyi, Sergeiev et al. 2012 & Biletskyi 2013) reported a new effect which we have detected for coal, specifically an adsorption opening effect of the solids pore space surface, which is a physical effect accompanying well-known Rehbinder effect and involving a dominant transition of the inner surface of pores into the external surface of grains when pre-wetted solids are crushed. Changes of surface characteristics of crushed material owing to this effect result in changes of rheological and other properties of crushed mass. The above is caused by a change of the zeta potential of crushed coal grains due to a dominant opening of oxidized pore surfaces, which brings about hydrophilization of coal substance – a shift of the hydrophilic-hydrophobic balance of the total external surface of crushed coal to the hydrophilic area.
