ABSTRACT

The free-description task asks people to describe their beliefs and opinions. It is a meta-task. Free-description tasks are also qualitative tasks, which means that participants are asked to provide an explicit, word-based answer (as opposed to a numerical answer) to a question. Since qualitative tasks are not common in perceptual research, and are indeed not typically viewed positively, free descriptions will be the only qualitative task in this book. More information on qualitative tasks can be found in Creswell (2009).
