Abstract

Chitin nanocrystals and nanofibrils possess attractive mechanical and biological properties, which makes them promising for application in different fields. This review discusses the application of chitin nanoparticles as a filler in composites based on biodegradable polymers. Different polymer matrices are considered: synthetic, semisynthetic, and natural (proteins and polysaccharides). Since chitin nanoparticles and nanofibrils possess a high aspect ratio and high Young’s modulus, the main attention is given to the mechanical properties of the composites. Due to the high bioactivity of chitin, composite materials based on it feature interesting biological properties.
