Abstract

Two coordination compounds, Mn2(L)2(bipy)4(H2O)4·Mn(bipy)2(H2O)4 (1) and Cu(phen)2Cl·H2L (2) (H3L = 4-sulfophthalic acid; bipy = 4,4′-bipyridine; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline), have been synthesized by the hydrothermal method and characterized by elemental analyses, IR spectra and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound 1 is a discrete trinuclear complex, composed of L3–-bridging dinuclear and N-donor mononuclear units. Two units are extended into a two-dimensional supra-molecular structure via hydrogen bonds and π–π interactions between bipy molecules. Compound 2 features the N-donor mononuclear structure with uncoordinated H2L anion. The H2L anions are interconnected by H-bonding interactions generating one-dimensional double-chain structures. In the solid state, compounds 1 and 2 exhibit photoluminescence with emissions maximums at 463 and 415 nm, respectively. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate the antiferromagnetic coupling between Mn ions in compound 1.
