Abstract
The optical textures of anisotropic phases of dispersed aqueous vanadium pentoxide solutions have been studied. It was established that the application of a magnetic field to these phases results in the formation of transient magnetohydrodynamic domains. The evaluation of the Freedericksz threshold field for the S-effect provided the determination of the elastic constant, K 1 ≈ 3.6 × 10−7 dyn. It is concluded that the studied anisotropic phases can be related to nematics.
