Abstract

Data on the taxonomic status, distribution, karyotype, and reproductive biology of the Sakhalin sturgeon Acipenser mikadoi Hilgendorf, 1892 are summarized. Sakhalin sturgeon is an anadromous species that inhabits Asia-Pacific and Japanese waters. It is distinct from other anadromous sturgeon species due to its migration patterns—it migrates only to relatively small rivers. It is listed in the international Red Data Book, as well as in Russian and regional Red books. This species, which has a low abundance and is attributed to species with 240–270 chromosomes (approx. 250), forms small, diminishing populations. The data on ecology and reproductive biology of the Sakhalin sturgeon from the Tumnin River are presented. No fundamental morphological differences of early life stages between Sakhalin sturgeon and other sturgeon species have been determined, although some behavioral peculiarities of its juveniles have been found during artificial rearing. The conservation of this species requires further research of its current range, places, terms, and conditions of reproduction, as well as embryology, nutrition, population structure, growth, and specifics of natural reproduction.
