Abstract

Abstract Lipid storage particles, termed lipid droplets, are ubiquitous organelles in almost all eukaryotic organisms. Lipid droplet surface proteins play particularly important roles in lipid droplet dynamics, and some of these proteins have recently been successfully isolated from and identified in evolutionarily diverse microalgae. Most of these microalgal proteins do not show high sequence similarity with those of animals and higher plants. In this review, we summarize recent progress in research on lipid droplet proteomes in diverse microalgae, and discuss the contribution of these proteins to lipid droplet formation in each species. Further understanding of lipid droplet biology in microalgae is expected to contribute to deepening our knowledge of organelle dynamics as well as offer insight for efficient biofuel production.
