Pb/Pb zircon ages from the Hunsrück Slate Formation (Bundenbach, Rhenish Massif): a contribution to the age of the Lower/Middle Devonian boundary

Abstract
Biostratigraphic records (goniatites, tentaculites, brachiopods, trilobites) indicate a Lower Emsian (Zlíchovian) age for the Hunsrück Slate Formation (Bundenbach, Hunsrück, Rhenish Massif, Germany). Magmatic zircons from a stratiform volcaniclastic layer intercalated in the Hunsrück Slate Formation (Hans Member) were investigated by the single zircon Pb/Pb evaporation method. They gave a mean age of 388.7 ± 1.2 Ma (2-sigma-mean). According to modern time scales, based on isotopic ages, this corresponds to the lowest Middle Devonian (Eifelian). Two possible conclusions are discussed: a) The Emsian/Eifelian and the Lower Devonian/Upper Devonian boundary, respectively, is younger than 388.7 ± 1.2 Ma, or b) the Hunsrück Slate Formation near Bundenbach has to be ascribed to the Middle Devonian.
Kurzfassung
Biostratigraphische Befunde (Goniatiten, Tentaculiten, Brachiopoden und Trilobiten) legen ein Unterems-Alter (Zlíchovium) der Hunsrückschiefer-Formation (Bundenbach, Hunsrück, Rheinisches Schiefergebirge, Deutschland) nahe. Aus einem stratiformen Vulkaniklastit der Hunsrückschiefer-Formation (Hans-Subformation) wurden magmatische Einzelzirkone mittels der Pb/Pb-Evaporationstechnik untersucht. Sie ergaben ein Alter von 388.7 ± 1.2 Ma (2 σ Fehler des Mittelwertes). Nach modernen, radiometrisch gestützten Zeitskalen entspricht dies einer Einstufung in das unterste Mitteldevon (Eifelium). Zwei mögliche Schlussfolgerungen werden diskutiert: a) Die Ems-Eifel- bzw. die Unterdevon-Mitteldevon-Grenze ist jünger als 388.7 ± 1.2 Ma, oder aber b) die Hunsrückschiefer-Formation von Bundenbach besitzt ein mitteldevonisches Alter.
