Abstract
The use of downhole gamma logs to define Upper Carboniferous marine bands in the subsurface is a widely accepted technique in the exploration of coal, water and hydrocarbons. This paper highlights, through field examples, possible errors in this method, and demonstrates how the use of gamma radiation to identify marine band can be enhanced by the use of spectral or natural gamma logs.
Résumé
L'utilisation des diagraphies gamma afin de définir les niveaux marins du Carbonifère supérieur en subsurface est une technique communément reconnue dans l'exploration du charbon, de l'eau et des hydrocarbures. Cette présente note souligne, à travers des exemples de terrains, les erreurs possibles induites par cette méthode, et démontre comment l'utilisation des radiations gamma pour l'identification des intercalations marines peut être rehaussée par l'emploi des diagraphies gamma naturel ou spectral.
