Abstract

The Austrian UNESCO MaB-program on aquatic - terrestrial ecotones is located on the Danube between river-km 885 and 1892 to the east of Vienna, and on the River March (R. Morava). 15 interdisciplinary modules deal with characteristic ecotone types, from the riverbed to the riverine forest. All major groups of the flora and fauna are studied, including human activities and socioeconomic aspects in the fluvial corridor. An increase in the level of detail will help to improve the diagnostic power of hydrological models and their prognostic value with respect to sensitive biota. The extrapolation of results from the module study areas onto the entire fluvial corridor will be based on aerial IR-photography and GIS-assays. The outcome of this project will be essential for any future management options concerning this region.
