Abstract

Starved and unstarved adult males of Dermestes maculatus De Geer 1774 were tested for their response to aggregation pheromone puffs on a servosphere (locomotion compensator) apparatus. Insect pathways were recorded for 20 sec before and 20 sec after pheromone presentation. For each beetle, locomotory rate, turning rate, turn bias and percent of time spent moving were calculated. The initial response of all beetles exposed to a pheromone puff was a brief stop followed by an increase in turning rate. Starved beetles showed also a significant reduction in locomotory rate.
