Filiform ilmenite crystals from Lemolo Lake, Douglas County, Oregon

Howard, Donald G.

Abstract

Needle-like crystals of ilmenite, found in basaltic andesite at Lemolo Lake, are elongated along an a-axis and are therefore truly filiform (elongation not explainable by symmetry). They are compared to crystals of CdS, similarly elongated, that were formed in the laboratory using tiny gold particles as a growth catalyst.
