Abstract

Rainwater from six evergreen trees was collected in Hungary and from two trees and from one shrub from forest undergrowth in Sweden. The samples were analysed for hyphomycete conidia. Stauro- and scolecoconidia of 41 species were recorded in the 16 throughfall samples. Of these species 15 are described, a further 12 are identified to genus and 14 are of unknown affinities. The number of species ranged from 7 to 22. The most frequent species, Arborispora paupera, occurred in almost all samples. Dwayaangam colodena a recently described species from Canada is a new record for Europe. Differences were found in the relative frequencies of frequent species recovered on evergreen and deciduous trees. The most frequent species proved to be persistent over a one-year period. All the conidia treated in this paper are considered to belong to canopy fungi. Conidia of aquatic hyphomycetes did not occur. The groups referred to as canopy fungi and aquatic hyphomycetes are discussed.
