Abstract

A new species, Colchicum gracile (Colchicaceae), endemic to S Italy, is described. The species is slightly reminiscent of C. bivonae but differs above all in features of tunics, leaves and anthers. In addition, the chromosome number is exclusive: 2n = 80 or rarely 82. Comparisons are also made with C. neapolitanum and C. lusitanum which occur in the same general area as the new species but in different habitats.
