A new species of Tanystropheus (Reptilia: Protorosauria) from the Middle Triassic of Makhtesh Ramon, Israel

Abstract
A new species of Tanystropheus is described from the Muschelkalk (most probably lower upper Anisian, Middle Triassic) on the basis of incomplete cervical vertebrae. The material referred to the new species is compared to other cervical vertebrae of Tanystropheus from the same site which differ in overall size and morphology. Given the incompleteness of the material, it is impossible to distinguish taxonomic variation from ontogenetic and individual variation. It is possible, however, that two or even three species of Tanystropheus of different adult size coexisted on the northern Gondwanan shelf, exhibiting habitat partitioning as was earlier suggested for the sauropterygian genus Nothosaurus, and for the actinopterygian genus Saurichthys.
Kurzfassung
Eine neue Art von Tanystropheus aus der Mittleren Trias von Makhtesh Ramon wird aufgrund von unvollständigen Cervicalwirbeln beschrieben. Das zu der neuen Art gestellte Material wird mit weiteren Halswirbelresten von derselben Lokalität verglichen. Die Unvollständigkeit des Materials erlaubt nicht die Unterscheidung taxonomischer von ontogenetischer Variabilität. Es ist jedoch nicht auszuschließen, daß zwei oder vielleicht gar drei Arten von Tanystropheus von unterschiedlicher Größe entlang der nördlichen Küste von Gondwana koexistierten, wie dies zuvor auch für jeweils zwei Arten der Gattung Nothosaurus (Reptilia) und Saurichthys (Actinopterygii) postuliert wurde.
