An optical fiber pressure sensor has been developed using a biconically tapered single-mode optical fiber. The sensor has a pressure range of 1265 mbar and a sensitivity of 0.008 dB/mbar. The main attributes of the presented intensity sensor are its ease of fabrication, good repeatability, and very low cost. That makes it very suitable for applications such as atmospheric pressure detection inside buildings, where it is being currently applied. It is also shown how to get higher-sensitivity sensors, following a similar fabrication procedure, for other possible applications.
