Abstract

Structure in the spectra of neutrons emitted from iron upon bombardment with 14.6 MeV neutrons has been investigated and explained in terms of excitation of levels in Fe56. The energies of scattered neutrons have been measured by the time-of-flight technique based on the associated particle method. The observed excitations have been correlated with the reported levels in a satisfactory manner. Evidence for new excitations at 8.8±0.2, 9.8±0.1, 10.2±0.1, 12.44±0.03, and 12.52±0.03 MeV has been obtained. The excitation of possible components of the M1 giant resonance in Fe56 is discussed.
