The study of bacteriophage Mu is of interest because of its ability to integrate in many different places in the host chromosome. Very important features of Mu are that the integration site is formed by the two ends of the linear phage genome and that the processes of integration and replication are strongly coupled in that genes A and B are essential both for integration and replication (Wijffelman and Lotterman 1977; for review, see Howe and Bade 1975).
Genes A and B of bacteriophage Mu are part of the early region that comprises the left part of the linear Mu genome and which is about 9000 bp long (see Fig. 1). This region of Mu is transcribed from the early promoter (pr), which is located about 1100 bases from the left end (unpubl.; B. Allet, pers. comm.) and transcription proceeds from left to right (Wijffelman and van de Putte 1974)...
