Abstract

A non-motile and rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain 02SUJ3, was isolated from freshwater collected from the Juam Reservoir (Republic of Korea). Cells were Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, oxidase-negative and catalase-positive. The major fatty acids were iso-C, iso-C G and iso-C 3-OH. The strain contained MK-7 as the major isoprenoid quinone. The main polar lipid was phosphatidylethanolamine. The DNA G+C content was 46.4 mol%. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain 02SUJ3 forms an independent lineage within the genus with low sequence similarity to Gsoil 492 and Gsoil 643 (95.7 %). Phenotypic characteristics distinguished strain 02SUJ3 from members of the genus . On the basis of the evidence presented in this study, strain 02SUJ3 is considered to represent a novel species, for which the name sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 02SUJ3 ( = JCM 17515 = KCTC 23328). An emended description of the genus is also provided.
