Abstract

A circularly polarized electromagnetic wave suffers a change of frequency on going through a rotating half-wave plate, and the energy of a quantum is correspondingly changed. Solving Maxwell's equations in the rotating frame shows how the field amplitudes and Poynting vector are appropriately modified to account for the process.
