Abstract

A new type of image intensifier, a channel plate, has been used to increase the image brightness in the field-ion microscope. Both electromagnetic and proximity focusing of the secondary electrons have yielded images without significant loss of contrast or resolution at a brightness gain of more than 103. The channel plate operates satisfactorily in the presence of the imaging gases normally used in field-ion microscopy.
