The Ultraviolet Spectrum of Annealed Hydrogenated Amorphous Carbon Grains
Abstract
UV spectra of annealed grains produced in a hydrogen-rich atmosphere are reported. The laboratory results support the hypothesis that the interstellar 2175-A feature is due to the extinction produced by amorphous carbon grains dehydrogenated via UV irradiation. Extinction spectra of carbon grains produced in an H2 atmosphere before and after annealing for 14 hr at 400 C are illustrated.
