Numerical Experiments on the Broadening of Emission Lines Formed in a Disk
Abstract
The shapes of emission lines formed from a thin, narrow disk inclined to the plane of the sky are investigated. Where the ratio of the velocity of rotation v to the intrinsic line width sigma is greater than about 2.0, the profile may become double-peaked. Where v is comparable to or smaller than 2 sigma, the line is single-peaked. A solid disk always presents a single-peaked profile. Increasing the inclination of the disk to the line of sight increases the width of the line. The differing widths of the emission lines in stars of the same WN subtype may result from differing values of v, sigma, and the inclination of the disk to the plane of the sky. If the disk has a large hole in its middle, the intensity of the emission line is reduced from what it would be for a solid disk or for one with a small hole.
