The Molecular Gas Bar in NGC 253
Abstract
Molecular gas in the bar at the center of NGC 253 has been imaged with 5" x 9" resolution in the CO emission line. The molecular bar has an angular extent of 39" x 12" and a mass in molecular clouds of 4.8 x 10^8^ M_sun_. The gas in the molecular bar appears to be rotating as a rigid body with a very steep rotation curve, indicating a large central mass concentration.
