A discussion of apsidal motion detected in selected spectroscopic binary systems.
Abstract
A comparison of apsidal motion detected in spectroscopic binary systems is made with available predictions from stellar models. Of the more than 100 systems considered, about half were judged to have inadequate available observations for detailed numerical analysis. The conclusions of this investigation are based on the recomputation of the orbital elements and uncertainty estimators for 51 systems using the Fourier analysis method for orbit computation. Of these systems, 12 were found to show significant apsidal motion. The comparison of these systems and those eclipsing binary systems judged to show significant apsidal motion with main-sequence homogeneous stellar models is made. This comparison indicates that there is a significant discrepancy in the range of 2-10 solar masses.
