The Structure of the Solar Chromosphere. II. Spectroheliograms in λ 10830 Å and Their Interpretation
Abstract
Spectroheliograms made in the X 10830 A line of He 1 show a network pattern of absorption which coincides with the Ca and Ha network. The absorption in 10830 is limited to the edges of the network cells, to plages and filaments. It is concluded that the edges of the network cells are the only areas in the chromosphere where temperature and density are sufficiently high to excite the 223 level.
