We appreciate the opportunity to respond to the concerns expressed by Dr. Coté to our editorial, “The semantics of ketamine.” We will address the issues in the order that they were presented in Dr. Coté’s letter.

Dr. Coté is concerned that we have misrepresented what constitutes general anesthesia by stating that “the hallmark of general anesthesia is the inability to independently maintain spontaneous respirations and a patent airway.” Dr. Coté claims that ketamine is “exactly” consistent with
