The Impact of Cross-National Carriers of Business Ethics on Attitudes about Questionable Practices and Form of Moral Reasoning

Abstract

The study explores the impact of cross-national carriers of ethics on attitudes about questionable business practices and form of moral reasoning across Mexican, Spanish and U.S. MBAs. Results show substantial agreement across cultures on twelve personally most objectionable practices, while form of moral reasoning varied significantly. Social cognitive theory is used to address the theoretical and practical implications.

*Bryan W. Husted is an Associate Professor of Management at the Graduate School of Business Management and Leadership of the Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey. His research deals with interorganizational cooperation, business ethics, and sustainable development. He has published in the Journal of Business Ethics, Business Ethics Quarterly, and Business and Society.

**Janelle Brinker Dozier holds a Ph.D. in Business Administration from The Ohio State University, where she specialized in Industrial Relations/Human Resources Management and Organizational Behavior. She is currently an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of New Orleans. In addition, Dr. Dozier is the coordinator of Human Resources courses for the University College of Tulane University. Dr. Dozier publishes in the area of business ethics and human resource management, with articles appearing in the Academy of Management Review and the Journal of Applied Social Psychology.

***J. Timothy McMahon is Associate Professor of Management at the University of Houston. He is currently involved in a multi-country study of top-management teams and is active in organization and executive development with an international focus.

****Michael W. Kattan is Assistant Professor of Medical Informatics in the Information Technology Program at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He received his Ph.D. (1993) in Management Information Systems from the University of Houston, His research has been published in journals such as the Journal of Management Information Systems, the Journal of Computer Information Systems, Computer Personnel, and AI Expert.
