Abstract
Islam today is striving to establish a secure and dignified place for itself in the daily lives of ordinary Muslims throughout the world. Despite the increased focus on contacts between the West and Islam in recent years, the relationship is hardly new. Indeed, from its very beginnings, Islam has had extensive and wide-ranging interaction with the West, involving both intractable conflict and fruitful exchange. In recent decades, unfortunately, the tendency has been directed more toward conflict than toward mutual exchange, with tensions fueled by the increased Muslim presence in the West.
