Building a World-Class College: Creating a Global Community at Pima Community College

Abstract

When Pima Community College (PCC) in Tucson, Arizona, announced its goal to internationalize, local newspaper articles, emails to college administrators, and social media bristled with critical commentary (Alaimo 2014). A vocal group of concerned citizens questioned: Shouldn’t community colleges focus on providing educational opportunities to their communities? Why should we “import” students from other countries? One illustrative email submitted to college administration asked: “We can’t get our own states children to come to Pima why are we tying [sic] to get other country’s kids here. Seems like our taxes should be spent on AZ kids first” (comment received July 2015).
