Jugular Foramen Meningiomas

Abdelkader Taibah (presenter), M. Sanna

Jugular foramen meningiomas are rare lesions. They arise from arachnoid villi associated with the jugular bulb. They can be classified into primary or secondary lesions and they have the tendency to invade lower cranial nerves, posterior fossa, temporal bone, and the parapharyngeal space.

The main complication related to their surgical removal is lower cranial nerve palsies, even in partial tumor removal. This condition is well tolerated in young patients, but causes serious problems in the elderly. The surgical decision-making must weigh the risk of tumor regarding growth versus the risk of lower cranial nerve palsies. In this paper we present our strategy in treating such tumors.
