The Guest Editor of this issue of Seminars in Neurology is Kelly Flemming, M.D. Dr. Flemming is Assistant Professor in Neurology in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Medical Director of the Mayo Stroke Center. Dr. Flemming is a summa cum laude graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology. She attended medical school at the University of Wisconsin where her accomplishments were recognized by election into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, together with the Rasey Medical Scholarship for Academic Excellence, The Francis Forester Award in Neurology, the Charles Russell Bardeen Award for Excellence in Anatomy, and the Mark Gichert Memorial Award in Neurosurgery. She did an internship at the Medical College of Wisconsin and her Neurology Residency and a Fellowship in Cerebrovascular Disease at the Mayo Clinic.

Dr. Flemming has received an incredible number of teaching awards for someone so early in her career. She was chosen the Mayo Clinic Teacher of the Year in Neurology in 2007, Teacher of the Year in Neuroanatomy in 2002 and 2004, Teacher of the Year Mayo Fellows Association in 2005, and the Mayo Clinic Internal Medicine Top Educator in 2009. In April 2010, she was recognized by the American Academy of Neurology for excellence in teaching with the AB Baker Teacher Recognition Award. She has received several other Excellence in Teaching Recognition Awards as well.

In addition to excellence in teaching, Dr. Flemming is well known for the terrific book that she edited with Dr. Mowzoon entitled, Neurology Board Review: An Illustrated Study Guide. This is a comprehensive textbook that Neurology Residents use throughout the country to study for the Neurology Board Examination. In addition, Dr. Flemming is an Editor of the textbook, Mayo Clinic Medical Neurosciences Organized by Neurologic Systems and Levels.

Dr. Flemming has put together a remarkable issue of Seminars of Neurology. There are manuscripts on acute stroke management, both medical and interventional therapies; subarachnoid and intracerebral hemorrhage; and anticoagulant associated intracranial hemorrhage. There are also reviews of carotid artery disease management, atrial fibrillation, unruptured intracranial aneurysms that are incidental findings on neuroimaging, telestroke medicine, complications of stroke, and recovery and rehabilitation in stroke.

It was an absolute joy working with Dr. Flemming on this issue of stroke and I am so terribly grateful to every single contributor. My residents often say to me: “I have reviewed the stroke literature, but I am confused about what the recommended therapy for our patient is.” Dr. Flemming and the contributors of this issue of Seminars in Neurology give us the guidance we are looking for. They have our tremendous appreciation.
