Summary

In the pregnant mare two different groups of oestrogens are produced by the placenta. The precursor of “classical” oestrogens (oestrone, oestradiol-17ß and oestradiol-17a) is dehydroepiandrosterone which orig-inates from the fetal gonads.

The ring B unsaturated oestrogens (equilin and equilenin and their derivatives) derive from farnesyl pyrophos-phate by a pathway not involving cholesterol.
