This paper examines the controversy surrounding the real inventor of the telephone in view of recently discovered papers examined by LC Pocock of the Standard Telephones and Cables' (STC) electroacoustics laboratory. LC Pocock's findings appear to show that, more than a decade before Alexander Graham Bell won his controversial patent, Germany's Philipp Reiss built a telephone that worked at least as well as the one on which the patent was based.
