New synthesis of hexamethyltungsten(VI). The octamethyltungstate-(VI) lon

Abstract

The interaction of tungsten hexachloride and trimethylaluminium in a hydrocarbon solvent followed by removal of chlorodimethylaluminium with an amine allows the synthesis of multigram quantities of hexamethyltungsten.

Interaction of WMe6 with an excess of methyl-lithium in diethyl ether produces the anion [WMe8]2– which has been isolated as the thermally stable dioxan solvate Li2[WMe8]·(C4H8O2)2.
